About Us

Young ExplorerWe are a non-profit organization that is staffed by one full-time employee and numerous volunteers. The center is guided by a board of education.

We have been in existence for over 13 years. During the first 9 years, the center was located and supported by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in Tulsa. During the last 4 years, it has been a project of Energy America Educational Institute, Inc., an Oklahoma Corporation with 501 c 3 tax status.

The center presently occupies over 5,000 sq ft donated by Kanbar Properties. There is one full-time Director/Teacher assisted by volunteers, many of are retired geoscientists, along with college and high school interns.

Each room in the center is devoted to a hands-on geoscience activity such as rock and mineral identification, fossil identification and earthquakes. Each activity lasts from 20 to 40 minutes.

Scouting

The center is the only facility in Northeastern Oklahoma and surrounding regions that hosts Boy Scout and Girl Scout geology merit badge classes. About 30 classes a year are presented resulting in several hundred merit badges be awarded each year. The center is also the home to younger scouting groups such as Webelos and Camp Fire.

Community Outreach

Our outreach programs include participation in the bi-annual Tulsa Global Alliance Kids World, Tulsa Rock and Mineral Kids Event, Bartlesville Energy Days, Tulsa Engineering Challenge, Green Country Teachers Workshop, DOE Science Bowl, Tulsa Geological Society E3 (energy, education and environment event and Tulsa area school career days. These activities directly affect over 6,500 teachers and students each year.

Our most popular community program is the fossil dig at KidZone during Tulsa Mayfest each year. We let each kid keep the best fossil they can find. The fossils typically include ammonites, sand dollars, brachiopods and shark’s teeth. The favorite by far for both boys and girls are the shark’s teeth!

Underserved Students

We are free. Many of the public schools that visit us have a very large representation of underserved students. During the summer, recreation centers, day camps and day care centers and organizations that work with underserved students are encouraged to visit us.

We have a very significant impact on youths at risk. By providing an enjoyable and enlightening experience, we encourage underserved students to stay in school and continue in math and science for a very rewarding career path and productive life.

OERB

The Tulsa Geoscience Center is only one of seven accredited sites in Oklahoma by the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board and is the only one located in Northeastern Oklahoma.

A Birthday Party that ROCKS

Have your birthday party with us here at the TGC. Each party will get an hour tour guided by the Director. During this tour we will make a fossil imprint, dig for fossils & gold, get a UV tattoo and visit GeoCentral, our gift shop. The party will last about 2 hours or longer.
